A standout from any viewpoint, this was an unusual discovery but a brilliant one that took my ears away to Austin and my childhood. Can you imagine an accomplished Mexican Mariachi band residing and touring in Europe? Not only that, can you imagine an all-female Mariachi band doing this? Imagine no more. The band is incredible and they are authentic and everyone seems to love them.
While it’s not an unfair comparison, it might surprise some to suggest that if they were around when Linda Rondstadt recorded those tribute albums to her father, Adelitas would have made a great touring band for Ronstadt. I hope she has a chance to hear this at some point. With three accomplished vocalists, I am not certain who leads El Toro Relajo.
My Granny had a great appreciation for a wide variety of music and I probably inherited much of my taste in everything music from her. My appreciation for musical variety has only increased and evolved as I discover more and more each day from recommendations from artists, from friends, from students. The discovery is half of the joy of listening to something new.
I hesitate to rank the songs Adelitas sent to me too long ago. They are all great, they remind me of my childhood around my grandmother and attending the Mexican weddings she took me to where the music was just as present and as wonderful as the food was.
